A stethoscope is required for auscultation. Manual meters are best used by trained practitioners. A basic reading through palpation alone can also be measured. But this measures only the systolic pressure.
- Mercury sphygmomanometers indicate pressure with a column of mercury, which does not require recalibration. They are often used in clinical trials of drugs and in clinical evaluations of high-risk patients, including pregnant women because of their accuracy. A wall mounted mercury sphygmomanometer is also known as a Baumanometer.
- Aneroid sphygmomanometers are in common use and may require calibration checks. Aneroid sphygmomanometers are safer than mercury sphygmomanometers. However, inexpensive ones are not more accurate. The major cause of departure from calibration is mechanical jarring.
Digital Blood Pressure Machine:
Digital meters uses oscillometric measurements and electronic calculations rather than auscultation. They may use manual or automatic inflation. Both are electronic, easy to operate and can be used in noisy environments. Both systolic and diastolic pressure are measured by oscillometric detection. These measurements are done by employing deformable membranes that are measured using differential capacitance, or differential piezoresistance. They include a microprocessor too. They are accurate in measuring blood pressure and pulse rate. However, systolic and diastolic pressures are obtained less accurately than with manual meters. Calibration is also a concern.
Digital oscillometric monitors are not recommended for patients who are suffering from arteriosclerosis, preeclampsia, pulsus alternans, arrhythmia and pulsus paradoxus. Because their calculations may not be correct for these conditions. An analog sphygmomanometer is preferable in these cases. But it should be used by a trained person. Digital instruments may use a cuff placed, in order of accuracy and inverse order of portability and convenience, around the upper arm, the wrist, or a finger.
