A pole or bar which is pivoted from a fixed point to move in a vertical direction is called as a boom barrier. The purpose of this pole is to block the access of any vehicle or even a person through an entry gate. As boom barriers are most commonly used at checkpoints, they are also referred to as boom barrier gates.
Usually the tip of a boom gate rises in a vertical arc to a near vertical position. The pole is easily tipped as boom gates are often counterweighted.
Boom gates are paired either end to end, or offset appropriately to block traffic in both directions. Some boom gates also contain a second arm which hangs 300 to 400 mm below the upper arm when lowered, to increase approach visibility. Some of them hangs on links so that it lies flat with the main boom as the barrier is raised. Some barriers also has a pivot roughly half way, where as the barrier is raised. The outermost half remains horizontal, with the barrier resembling an upside-down L when raised.
Boom gates are usually found at drawbridges, parking facilities, checkpoints, level crossings and entrances to restricted areas. They are also the general method for controlling passage through toll booths. Some boom gates are manually operated while others are automatic and powered. Most of the time the manual gates are hung in the manner of a normal gate. Boom barrier offers security at the entry and exit points of offices, corporate houses, residential areas, industrial unit, parking lots, toll tax plazas etc.
Types of Boom Barrier:
There are two types of boom barrier, These include:
Manual Boom Barrier:
The standard manual arm barrier is made from durable aluminium, providing a robust, high quality solution for restriction of access by vehicles to your premises. The adjustable counter balanced fishtail enables the manual arm barrier to be easily lifted and lowered when access is required and is supplied with a padlock and lockable arm rest. The manual arm barrier can to locked in both the open (barrier arm in the raised position) and closed (barrier arm in the lowered position) position, giving you flexibility and access to your car park or site easily and conveniently when needed while restricting access by unauthorised vehicles. The manual arm barrier can be fitted quickly, easily and securely to your site.
Automatic boom barrier:
Usually, automatic boom barriers are used to control vehicular movement on places where access control is required. This is to ensure that only authorized personnel can access the premises. Here, an aluminum bar rises in vertical arc to allow movement of vehicles. Different types of technologies are available for an automatic boom barrier. Electro-mechanical is one of them, which is extensively used due to its reliability. These electro-mechanical devices generally can run continuously without generating heat as it comes with 24VDC drive units. So electro-mechanical boom barriers can be operated continuously and in an intensive duty cycle.
Operation of automatic boom barrier:
An automatic boom barrier can be operated through:
- Push button
- Remote control
- RFID tags / RFID reader
- Loop detectors
- Opto-electronic sensors
- Any third party access control device
