A boom barrier is made up of a pole or bar which is pivoted from a fixed point to move in a vertical direction. This bar or pole allows to block the access of any vehicle or even a person through an entry gate. Since boom barriers are most commonly used at checkpoints, they are also referred to as boom barrier gates.
Typically the tip of a boom gate rises in a vertical arc to a near vertical position. Boom gates are often counterweighted, so the pole is easily tipped.
Boom gates are often paired either end to end, or offset appropriately to block traffic in both directions. Some boom gates also have a second arm which hangs 300 to 400 mm below the upper arm when lowered, to increase approach visibility, and which hangs on links so it lies flat with the main boom as the barrier is raised. Some barriers also feature a pivot roughly half way, where as the barrier is raised, the outermost half remains horizontal, with the barrier resembling an upside-down L when raised.
Boom gates are typically found at level crossings, drawbridges, parking facilities, checkpoints and entrances to restricted areas. They are also the usual method for controlling passage through toll booths. Some boom gates are automatic and powered, others are manually operated. Manual gates are sometimes hung in the manner of a normal gate. Boom barrier offers security at the exit and the entry points of industrial unit, offices, corporate houses, residential areas, parking lots, toll tax plazas etc.
Manual Boom Barrier:
The standard manual arm barrier is made from durable aluminium, providing a robust, high quality solution for restriction of access by vehicles to your premises. The adjustable counter balanced fishtail enables the manual arm barrier to be easily lifted and lowered when access is required and is supplied with a padlock and lockable arm rest. The manual arm barrier can to locked in both the open (barrier arm in the raised position) and closed (barrier arm in the lowered position) position, giving you flexibility and access to your car park or site easily and conveniently when needed while restricting access by unauthorized vehicles. The manual arm barrier can be fitted quickly, easily and securely to your site.
Automatic boom barrier:
Automatic boom barriers are used to control vehicular movement on places where access control is required to ensure that only authorized personnel can access the premises. An aluminum Bar rises in vertical arc to allow movement of vehicles.
There are various technologies for an automatic boom barrier. One of them is electro-mechanical, which is widely used due to its reliability.
These electro-mechanical devices come with 24VDC drive units which can run continuously without generating heat, so electro-mechanical boom barriers can be operated continuously and in an intensive duty cycle.
Operation of automatic boom barrier:
An automatic boom barrier can be operated through:
- Push button
- Remote control
- RFID tags / RFID reader
- Loop detectors
- Opto-electronic sensors
- Any third party access control device
