Carpets & Rugs:

Carpet is a textile floor covering consisting of an upper layer of pile, traditionally made from wool, attached to a backing. Synthetic fibers such as polypropylene, nylon or polyester are often used since the 20th century in the manufacturing of carpets, as these fibers are less expensive than wool.

Types of Carpet & Rugs:

• Woven carpet is produced on a textile similar to woven fabric. The pile can be either plush which is a is a cut pile or Berber which is a loop pile. The carpet that is formed after combining these two styles is called as cut and loop carpeting. Various colored yarns are used to produce intricate patterns from predetermined designs. These are the most expensive carpet due to its slow speed of the manufacturing process.
• Needle felt carpet are manufactured by felting and intermingling each synthetic fibers using forked and barbed needles. These are extremely durable carpet and are normally found in commercial settings such as hotels and restaurants where there is frequent traffic.
• Knotted carpets are made with several styles of knotting. Symmetrical and asymmetrical are two  main types of knot. Knotting by hand is mostly used in oriental rugs and carpets.
• Tufted carpets are most common type of carpet that are manufactured for floor covering purposes in the world. The pile is injected into a backing material to provide stability. Different textures can be achieved by shearing the pile.
• The warp (vertical) and weft (horizontal) threads can be interlocked to produce aflatweave carpet. Kilim, soumak, plain weave, and tapestry weave are some of the types of oriental flatwoven carpet.
• The strips of cloth such as wool or cotton can be pulled through the meshes of a sturdy fabric such as burlap to make a simple type of rug handmade called as hooked rug. The pattern of embroidery carpets is established by the application of stitches to a cloth base which is often linen.

• Mostly carpets are made of wool of sheep, which is durable, dyes readily, and handles easily.
• Movability is the factor that makes the difference between a rug and a carpet. Carpet is a textile floor covering that is fixed to the floor and stretches from wall to wall, where as Rugs are smaller than the size of the room and are not fixed to the floor. Rugs can be rolled up and moved from place to place.
• Carpets are used for insulating the feet of a person from a concrete floor or cold tile. It can also be used for making a room more comfortable as a place to sit on the floor and reducing sound from walking. It can be used as a decorative item or adding color to a room.
• Carpets can be made on a textile similarly to woven fabric. These can be made using needle felts, knotted by hand, flatwoven, made with their pile injected into a backing material, made by hooking wool or cotton through the meshes of a sturdy fabric or embroidered.
