Coir Product:

The products made from this coconut fiber or coir are known as coir products. The natural fibre extracted from the outer husk of coconut is Coir or coconut fibre. The fibrous material found between the hard, internal shell and the outer coat of a coconut is coir. It is used in products such as floor mats, doormats, brushes and mattresses. Other uses of brown coir which is made from ripe coconut are in upholstery padding, sacking and horticulture. White coir, made from unripe coconuts, is used for making finer string, rope, brushes and fishing nets. It has the advantage of not sinking. So it can be used in long lengths on deep water without the added weight dragging down boats and buoys.

Types of Coir:

Coir Fibre is classified based on its nature of color, extraction, presence of long and short fibres, impurities etc. There are two varieties of coir that include are brown and white.

Brown coir:

These are harvested from fully ripened coconuts. It is  strong, thick and has high abrasion resistance. It is typically used in brushes, mats and sacking.  Brown coir fibres that are mature contain more lignin and less cellulose than fibres such as flax and cotton, so are stronger but less flexible. Fresh water is used to process brown coir.

White coir:

These fibres are harvested from coconuts before they are ripe. They are white or light brown in color and are smoother and finer, but also weaker. They are generally spun to make yarn that can be used in mats or rope. Fresh water and seawater are both used in the production of white coir.

Uses of Coir:

Cordage, packaging, bedding, flooring, and others:

• Red coir is used in brushes, mattresses, floor mats and doormats, floor tiles and sacking.
• A small amount is also made into twine.
• Pads of curled brown coir fibre are made by needle-felting and are shaped and cut to fill mattresses and for use in erosion control on river banks and hillsides.
• A large proportion of brown coir pads are sprayed with rubber latex which bonds the fibres together to be used as upholstery padding for the automobile industry in Europe. The material is also used for insulation and packaging.
• White coir is used in rope manufacture. Woven coir fibre mats are made from the finer grades of bristle and white fibre using hand or mechanical looms.
• Due to its strong resistance to saltwater, white coir also is used to make fishing nets.

Agricultural and horticultural uses:

• As coir is widely available and environmentally friendly, it is used in agriculture and horticulture. Coir is a substitute for peat and sphagnum.
• Coir is  useful to deter snails from delicate plantings, and as a growing medium in intensive greenhouse horticulture.
• Coir is also used for growing mushrooms.
• Coconut Coir is excellent at growing seedlings, creating potting mix, water retention, pest resistant, and to use as bedding in Worm Bins.

Oil and Fluid Absorption:

Due to its superior absorption capabilities, dry coconut coir pith is gaining popularity as an oil and fluid absorbent.

Animal Bedding:

Coconut coir pith is also used as a bedding in animal farms, litter boxes and pet houses to absorb animal waste.

Benefits of Coir:

As it absorbs ten times its weight in water, it keeps roots well hydrated and provides an excellent growing medium for healthy development of roots. Coir is not pest friendly. As coir decomposes slowly,  it lasts for a long time in soil. It improves water retention in soils that drain too quickly.
