A conveyor system is a piece of mechanical handling equipment that is used to move materials from one location to another.

Working of Conveyor Systems:

  • Both the drive pulley and idler must run in the same direction, either clockwise or counterclockwise for the belt to move effectively.
  • Conventional conveyor systems such as moving walkways and grocery store conveyors are generally straight.
  • However, the unit needs to turn sometimes to deliver the items to the proper location.
  • There are unique cone-shaped wheels or rotors which allow the belt to follow a bend or twist without getting tangled for the turns.

Parts of Conveyor Systems:

The belt support, the pulley and the drive unit are three main parts of a conveyor system.
An essential role is played by each component in the operation of  conveyor unit.
Although, all conveyor systems contain these parts, designs vary in the construction materials and the location of each component.
Belt support is an important component to ensure the belt moves smoothly as the belt sags when a heavy object is placed on top, and this causes the belt not to move smoothly or swiftly as it should because of the sagging if the support unit is not firm.
A firm support unit can keep the belt taut and running efficiently.
The pulley system is an external component that is used to control the belt movement.
Each unit has at least two pulleys, out of which one is used to operate under power and he other one is an idle one.

Conveyor Pulleys:

A conveyor pulley is used at either end of a conveyor, or near the drive/motor.
Pulleys are made up of various components including the shell, end disk, shaft, hub and locking assembly.
Modern conveyor pulleys are made of rolled shells with flexible end disks and locking assemblies.
The locking assembly can be replaced with a hub and bushing on lower tension pulleys.
The shell is also referred to as the rim and the end disk and hub may be one piece.
Usually, a conveyor consist of at least two pulleys, head pulley and tail pulley.
However, additional pulleys can be used in a conveyor depending on the configuration.
Usually, standard-duty pulleys adequate for simple applications.
Mine-duty and engineered pulleys are used where heavy-duty pulleys are required.
Drive pulleys are driven by a motor and power transmission unit to propel the belt and material to the discharge.
Drive pulleys can also be the head pulley that is used for the purpose of driving a conveyor belt.
Normally they are mounted in external type bearings and driven by a motor and reducer.
Most common style of drive pulleys are conveyor drum pulleys, wing pulleys and spiral pulleys.
Conveyor Roller is an assembly of roller that is used in the bed of a conveyor as a support for the conveyed product.  
These rollers are also used in the return section under the conveyor bed to provide support for the return portion of the conveyor belt.

The distance moved by items between functional areas; the pathway through which it moves considering if there are stops, elevation changes, curves or diversions; product orientation  in which items must be positioned in a particular way for easy scanning of barcodes, transfer, etc; transfer speed such as short, rapid movement or slow, steady movement; ambient environment as well as available space need to be taken in to consideration when looking in to process requirements.

Flow rate:

The average transfer rate of your facility as well as periods of peak demand due to seasonal fluctuations should be handled by your conveyor system.
The length and speed of conveyor will be determined by the number of products you need to transport per hour or per minute.
A large plastic chain conveyor is suitable to be used for transferring plastic-footed pallets, while a chain driven roller conveyor is best suited for transferring wooden pallets.

A powered transfer is required for products with a smaller footprint while, gravity rollers may be required for larger and longer products.
