Cotton:


Cotton is a soft, fluffy staple fiber which is made of pure cellulose and grows in a boll. It is an ideal fabric to make clothes, homewares and industrial products like tarpaulins, tents, hotel sheets, army uniforms, etc because of its strength and absorbency. Cotton is well known for its versatility and natural comfort.

Some facts about Cotton:

 

  • Cotton is one of the leading agricultural crops of the world.
  • Cotton fabrics are durable, washable and resistant to abrasion. It accepts many dyes.
  • Cotton is comfortable to wear as it absorbs and releases moisture quickly.
  • Cotton can undergo various finishing processes to make it resistant to stains, water, and mildew as well as to increase resistance to wrinkling, thus reducing or eliminating the need for ironing. Shrinkage in laundering can also be reduced by these process.
  • Disposable products can be made up of nonwoven cotton that can be made by fusing or bonding the fibres together. Products like towels, polishing cloths, tea bags, tablecloths, bandages, and disposable uniforms and sheets for hospital and other medical uses can be made up of non woven cotton.
  • Cotton fibres may be classified into three groups based on staple length and appearance. These include,  the fine, lustrous fibres with staple length ranging from about 2.5 to 6.5 cm, the standard medium-staple cotton with staple length from about 1.3 to 3.3 cm and the short staple, coarse cottons, ranging from about 1 to 2.5 cm in length.
  • Long staple cottons are costly. these are used mainly for fine fabrics, yarns and hosiery. These are least plentiful and most difficult to grow.
  • The short staple cottons are used to make carpets and blankets as well as coarse and inexpensive fabrics. It can be blend with other fibres.
  • The cottonseed are separated from the fibres by a process called ginning.
  • Textile products can be made out of cotton. These include terrycloth used for highly absorbent bath towels and robes, denim used for blue jeans, cambric used in the manufacture of blue work shirts and corduroy, cotton twill and seersucker.
  • Bed sheets, socks, underwear as well as T-shirts are made from cotton.
  • Some materials that blend cotton with other fibers are rayon and synthetic fibers such as polyester. A stretchier thread can be made by blending it with elastine for knitted fabrics, and apparel such as stretch jeans.
  • Cotton can be used in manufacturing of cotton paper, tents, fishing nets, coffee filters and in bookbinding.
  • Cottonseed oil is produced from cottonseed, which can be consumable like any other vegetable oil after refining. Cottonseed oil  used for cooking as it is cholesterol free, high in polyunsaturated fats and contains high levels of anti-oxidants.
  • Cottonseed oil is used in the manufacturing of soap, cosmetics, pharmaceutical products, margarine, emulsifiers, rubber and plastics.
  • Linters is the short fibres that remain on the cottonseed after ginning. These are used to produce goods such as swabs, bandages, bank notes, cotton buds and x-rays.
  • Cotton lisle is a finely spun, tightly twisted type of cotton that is is used mainly for underwear, stockings, and gloves because of its strong and durable property.
  • Usually cotton is measured in bales. A bale is approximately 0.48 cubic meters and weigh 226.8 kilograms.
