Drip Irrigation Systems:

Drip irrigation system, also known as micro irrigation system is a system that allows dripping of water in to the soil at very low rates that usually varies from 2 to 20 liters per hour. The water drips to the root of the plants from a small diameter plastic pipes fitted with outlets called emitters or drippers either above the soil surface or buried below the surface. Hence, it saves water and nutrients present in the soil as water enters directly into the root of the plant minimizing evaporation.
The system provides a high moisture level in the soil for the plant as the applications are more frequent than with other methods such as surface irrigation or sprinkler irrigation. The soil remains unsaturated and there is no free water stands or runs over the surface as long as the application rate is below the infiltration capacity of the soil.

Components of Drip Irrigation Systems:

A typical drip irrigation system consists of many components. This include:
  • A pump unit or pressurized water source
  • Water filters or filtration systems such as sand separator, fertigation systems and chemigation equipment which is optional
  • Backflow prevention device to prevent backwash
  • Pressure Control Valve to control the pressure of water supply
  • Distribution lines that include primary larger diameter pipe, secondary smaller diameter pipe if necessary and pipe fittings
  • Control valves and safety valves which may be hand operated, electronic, or hydraulic
  • Lateral lines consist of smaller diameter polyethylene tube
  • Poly fittings and accessories to make connections
  • Emitting devices such as emitter or dripper, micro spray head, inline dripper or inline drip tube
  • Both pump and valves may be manually or automatically operated by a controller in a drip irrigation system. Filters are employed in most large drip irrigation systems to prevent clogging of the small emitter flow path by small waterborne particles
  • Since water can be more precisely applied to the plant roots, drip irrigation is more helpful in water conservation by reducing evaporation and deep drainage compared to other types of irrigation

Advantages of Drip Irrigation Systems:

  • Drip irrigation has a large number of advantages over other irrigation methods. This include:
  • As the water is directly applied to the root of the plants, fertilizer and nutrient loss is minimized.
  • Efficiency of water application is high if managed correctly.
  • Drip irrigation can be employed in all landscapes. There is no need of field leveling and fields with irregular shapes are easily accommodated.
  • Reduced weed growth as water and nutrients are supplied only to the cultivated plant.
  • Soil erosion risk due to irrigation water impact is minimum.
  • Operational costs is low due to reduced labor requirement. Energy cost can be reduced as drip irrigation is operated with lower pressure than other irrigation methods.
  • The the risk of disease is lessened as foliage remains dry.
  • With minimal waste of fertilizers, fertigation can easily be included.

Disadvantages of Drip Irrigation Systems:

  • High initial investment is required.
  • Regular movement of equipment and UV radiation from sun can affect the tubes used for drip irrigation, shortening their lifespan. Hence, there is always a need of capital for replacement of drip irrigation equipment on the surface.
  • The soil content and food crops can be affected by degrading plastic pipes. The estrogenic chemicals will be released into the surrounding environment from these damaged pipes.
  • Clogging or bioclogging can happen if the water is not properly filtered and the equipment not properly maintained.
  • A proper planning is required for drip tape winding, disposal, recycling or reuse as drip tape causes extra cleanup costs after harvest.
  • Subsurface drip may be unable to wet the soil surface for germination in lighter soils. The installation depth should be carefully considered in this case.
  • Water filters are required and also regular flushing of pipe system is mandatory as drip irrigation emitters are vulnerable to clogging and dysfunction.
  • Highly skilled person is required for irrigation water management in order to achieve optimal water distribution and efficient use.
