Isopropyl Alcohol, also called isopropanol or 2-propanol is a colorless, flammable chemical compound with a strong odor which is used in the manufacturing of various industrial and household chemicals. It is an example of a secondary alcohol, where the alcohol carbon atom is attached to two other carbon atoms.

• Isopropyl Alcohol is a commonly used in manufacturing of antiseptics, disinfectants, and detergents.  
• Isopropyl alcohol is soluable in water, ethanol, ether, and chloroform.
• It can be used to dissolve polyvinyl butyral, different oils, ethyl cellulose, alkaloids, gums and natural resin.
• Isopropyl alcohol is not soluable with salt solutions. A salt such as sodium chloride can be added to separate it from aqueous solutions causing concentrated isopropyl alcohol to separate into a distinct layer. This process is called salting out.
• A small amounts of isopropyl alcohol are generated in the body if you have diabetic ketoacidosis.
• Isopropyl Alcohol can be used as a solvent for coatings or for industrial processes.
• These can be used for pharmaceutical applications, because of its low toxicity.
• Some isopropyl alcohol can be used as a chemical intermediate and can be converted to acetone.
• A wide range of non-polar compounds can be dissolved by Isopropyl alcohol.
• It is widely used as a solvent and as a cleaning fluid, especially for dissolving oils as it evaporates quickly, without leaving any traces of oil, when compared to ethanol. It is also relatively non-toxic, compared to alternative solvents.
• The most common use of Isopropyl alcohol is cleaning eyeglasses, electrical contacts, audio or video tape heads, DVD and other optical disc lenses. It can also be used for removing thermal paste from heatsinks on CPUs and other IC packages.
• Isopropyl Alcohol is used in manufacturing of medical items such as rrubbing alcohol, hand sanitizer, and disinfecting pads that contain a 60 to 70 ercent solution of isopropyl alcohol or ethanol in water.
• Otitis externa is an inflamation in the earcanal which can be prevented by using Isopropyl as a water drying aid.
• Isopropyl alcohol were used as a solvent or as an anesthetic by inhaling the fumes or orally. However, the use of isopropyl alcohol is prohibited now a days because of the complications arose, including respiratory irritation, internal bleeding, and visual and hearing problems.
• Isopropyl alcohol can be used as fuel additives to increase the octane rating of petrol or act as corrosion inhibitors or lubricants. Therefore, the use of higher compression ratios allows for greater efficiency and power.
• Brake fluid traces can also be removed from hydraulic braking systems by using isopropyl alcohol, to eliminate the contamination of brake pads by the brake fluid which could cause poor braking.
• A comparatively non-toxic alternative to formaldehyde and other synthetic preservatives can be provided by isopropyl alcohol as a biological specimen preservative.
• Isopropyl alcohol can be used in DNA extraction as DNA is insoluble in isopropyl alcohol.
• Isopropyl alcohol should be kept away from heat and open flame as the vapor of isopropyl alcohol is denser than air and is flammable.
• Eye irritation can be a cause of isopropyl alcohol. Wearing protective gloves is recommended while handling it as it is a potential allergen.
