Kitchen sink is the place where you wash your dishes. Sinks are available in different sizes, shapes and materials, and can include a wide range of accessories, including utensil trays, drying racks, cutting boards and colanders. Large, single-basin sinks are much preferred compared to double sinks to make space for bulky pots and pans. Sink plays an essential role in the function and design of your kitchen.
Types of Kitchen Sinks:
Basically, there are three different types of sinks, each installed in a different way. These include top-mount sinks, undermount sinks, and flush-mount sinks.
Also known as Self-Rimming or Drop-In Sinks, these are the most common type of kitchen sink. The sink is inserted into a pre-cut hole in the countertop in the top-mount sink. The wide rim around the sink supports it on top of the countertop. It is then sealed in place with silicone for a water-tight fit. Because they simply slide into place before being sealed, these sinks are very easy to install.
Top-Mount sinks are easy to find as they are the most common type of sink. The cost of top-Mount sinks are less compared to undermount or flush-mount sink. It is not possible to sweep food or liquid directly into the sink as the lip of the sink is exposed. This makes it harder to clean the edges of the sink and the countertops. The extra one or two inch space that the rim takes up can reduce the valuable counter space.
Undermount sinks are attached to the underside of a countertop. The sink stays in place by special clips. The sink can also be supported from underneath by the base cabinet structure. Food and other waste do not get stuck on the top of the countertop. Cleaning is easier as it is possible to sweep food or liquid directly into the sink. It is a modern aesthetic, and take up less counter space than an overmount sink of the same bowl size.
These are more expensive than undermount sinks. Undermount sinks require a bit of careful design of the mounting system, particularly if the sink is heavy.
Usually debris get stuck at the inside edge where the countertop edge and sink meet.
Also known as integrated sinks, these is the one in which the surface of the countertop flows seamlessly into the sink. There is no visible edges or changes in material as the sink is made of the same solid surface material as the countertop. But it is fabricated separately. The two are joined with a glued seam that is nearly invisible
There is also another type of flush-mount sink where the tile reaches the edge of the sink. These are called tiled countertops. The integrated sink are space-saving and easy to clean. These are more difficult to find and are more expensive as integrated sinks are custom ordered items along with the countertops they are made with. Also, replacement can be a complicated endeavor if fabricated incorrectly or the sink is incorrectly installed.
Configuration and Use:
The size, shape, and number of bowls you choose depends on how you intend to use the sink. Having a double sink can have advantages if you do a lot of cooking and washing up. So you have one bowl for the disposal and one for soaking which will make your work easier. It is possible to separate heavier items from more delicate items when you are using a double sink. Where as in a single sink delicate items may become broken more easily. Having two sinks also allows you to keep one side clean while you use another side for items that may harbor bacteria such as raw meats.
Single bowl sinks are available in the same overall size as double sinks. But single sinks are also available in a range of smaller sizes as well. Single bowl sinks can take up relatively little space, while a double sink are large enough to accommodate two bowls. Double bowl sinks come in a range of sizes and configurations. It can be two bowls of equal size and shape. It can also have a large compartment with a smaller side compartment. This way, versatility is provided for you to use your sink. However, it is difficult to soak a large pan or pot in a double bowl sink because of the partition between the two bowls. Single bowl sinks are more useful for things like washing large pots. You can get an option of placing a drying rack in the sink rather than on the counter by using a double bowl sink with two large bowls. So, you can eliminated the need of counter space as you can wash dishes in one bowl and dry them in the other.
