Portland Cement:

Portland Cement is the most common type of cement that is used around the world.

Some facts about Portland Cement:Portland

  • It is usually made from limestone with a basic ingredient of concrete, mortar, stucco, and non-specialty grout.
  • Portland Cement is produced by heating limestone and clay minerals in a kiln to form clinker. The clinker are grinded and added to 2-3 percent of gypsum to produce a fine powder.
  • Ordinary portland cement (OPC) is the most common type of Portland Cement which is grey in color, but white portland cement is also available.
  • Portland cement can cause chemical burns as it is caustic.
  • Portland Cement can cause irritation or lung cancer with severe exposure as it contain a number of hazardous components, including crystalline silica and hexavalent chromium.
  • High energy consumption required to mine, manufacture, and transport the cement is the main concern for environment.
  • The release of the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide, dioxin, NOx, SO2, and particulates can cause air polution.
  • About 10 percent of world carbon dioxide emissions is due to production of portland cement.
  • Portland cement is one of the lowest cost materials because of widespread availability and low cost limestone, shales, and other naturally occurring material used in it.
  • Concrete produced from Portland cement is one of the most widely used versatile construction materials in construction work.
  • Portland cement clinker is a hydraulic material consisting of hydraulic calcium silicates containing one or more of the forms of calcium sulfate.
  • The most common use for portland cement is in the production of concrete which can be used in the construction of structural elements like panels, beams, and street furniture.
  • Portland cement with sand and water only can also be used in mortars, for plasters and screeds and in grouts.
  • The product sets in a few hours, and hardens over a period of weeks when water is mixed with portland cement.
  • A typical concrete takes about 6 hours to set and a compressive strength of 8 MPa can be developed in 24 hours.
  • White portland cement or white ordinary portland cement (WOPC) is almost similar to ordinary, grey, portland cement in all respects, except for its high degree of whiteness.
  • There is some modification to the method of manufacture to obtain this white color. It also requires high purity raw materials with low Fe2O3 content. A higher kiln temperature is required to sinter the clinker in the absence of ferric oxides.
  • The white cement requires a higher sintering temperature around 1600 degree centigrade as Fe2O3 decreases the melting point of the clinker. So, it is more expensive than the grey cement.
  • Wet cement and can easily cause severe skin burns if not promptly washed off with water as it is strongly caustic.
  • Dry cement powder can cause severe eye or respiratory irritation in contact with mucous membranes.
  • Cement kilns are used as a processing option for various types of waste streams as they efficiently destroy many hazardous organic compounds de to the high temperatures inside cement kilns, combined with the oxygen rich atmosphere and long residence times.
  • Industrial byproducts such as Slag, Fly ash, Silica fume and Synthetic gypsum from the waste stream can be used in the manufacturing of Portland cement.
