A tile is a thin object usually available insquare or rectangular shape. A manufactured piece of hard-wearing material such as stone, metal, baked clay, ceramic, or even glass is known as a Tile. Generally, it is used for covering floors, roofs, walls, or other objects such as tabletops. The similar units made from lightweight materials such as wood, perlite, and mineral wool, typically used for wall and ceiling applications can also be referred as tile.
Tiles are often used for floor and wall coverings. These can range from simple square tiles to complex or mosaics. Tiles are most often made of ceramic. These are usually glazed for internal uses and unglazed for roofing. Other materials commonly used for tiles are glass, cork, concrete and other composite materials, and stone. Typically, tiling stone is onyx, granite, marble or slate. Thinner tiles can be used on walls rather than on floors. This is because floors require more durable surfaces that will resist impacts.
Tile can be classed into four types: ceramic/porcelain, glass, quarry, and stone.
Ceramic and Porcelain Tile:
Ceramic tile is cost-effective and is best for low-cost surfacing with an almost infinite choice of styles. Ceramic tile is porous by nature. So a glaze must be applied to the tile and then the tile is fired again to harden the glaze. It can be formed into an infinite variety of colors and shapes because it is made from scratch. Porcelain is a variety of ceramic tile that is certified by The Porcelain Tile Certification Agency (PTCA) as being either porcelain or not. Porcelain is a better for high moisture areas like next to bathtubs and showers as it has a higher standard of water absorption than ceramic.
Glass Tile can be used for the surfaces that get lots of attention. It is commonly used for kitchen and bathroom backsplashes. Because it cracks under pressure, glass mosaic is not appropriate for floors. Most mosaic glass comes attached to a web backing that allows you to install one square foot at a time. Glass tile has a lustrous, sparkling beauty that cannot be matched in other types of tile materials.
Quarry Tile are best for outdoor flooring and indoor flooring such as foyers and hallways. It is perfect for flooring because quarry tile provides a good grip for its rough surface. But quarry tile is not good for kitchen countertops as it is very porous. However, even though quarry tile can be sealed to make it less porous, it is still not appropriate for food preparation surfaces.
Stone are best for kitchens and bathrooms. Granite easily cracks, and like quarry tile it is porous, so it must be sealed and polished on a regular basis. Not only that, granite and marble are easily scratched and are not always resistant to high temperatures such as those from hot kitchen pots. The coloring and texture of natural stone cannot be duplicated by ceramic tile. It is very much fascinating and provides unique design for your house.
Tiles also can be classified in below categories:
Roof tiles are designed to keep out rain and heat. These are traditionally made from locally available materials such as granite, terracotta, clay or slate. Materials such as glass, concrete and plastic are also used and some clay tiles have a waterproof glaze.
These are commonly made of ceramic or stone. However, now a day rubber or glass tiles for floors are also in trend. Ceramic tiles may be painted and glazed. Small mosaic tiles may be laid in many patterns. Typically, floor tiles are set into mortar consisting of cement sand and often a latex additive for extra adhesion. The spaces between the tiles are generally filled with sanded or unsanded floor grout. But traditionally mortar was used.
Ceiling tiles are lightweight tiles used inside buildings. They are placed in an aluminium grid. They provide little thermal insulation but are generally designed either to improve the acoustics of a room or to reduce the volume of air being heated or cooled.
