Tractor is a type of vehicle that is used in farms to provide the power and traction for agricultural tasks. Basically, tractor is the combination of two words: traction and motor. It is used to pull heavy loads at low speed and perform various agricultural tasks, especially tillage.
Types of Tractors:
Many different types of tractors are now been developed depending on the need and type of work to be performed in agriculture. These tractors are divided into various categories based on their construction, purpose and drive that include:
Utility tractors are used for the general purpose tasks like ploughing, landscaping and farming. Some other type of equipment can also be added through its drive to perform multi-fuctionality such as pulling farm equipment like tillers, harvesters, threshers, hay cutters and more. Generally, these tractors have gasoline or diesel engines with power ranging from 45HP to 140 HP. Many utility tractors with loaders, backhoes, pallet forks and similar devices are used for nonfarm grading, landscape maintenance and excavation purposes. Utility tractors can be used by those farmers who can not afford to buy different equipments for performing various farming activities.
Row Crop Tractors:
Row crop tractors are used for various purpose such as ploughing, harvesting, leveling, harrowing, pulling seed drills etc. Basically these tractors are used in the farms where plants are cropped in a row. Greater ground clearance, easy steering moves, quick and easy actions of implements and good row spacing are some of the main advantages of row crop tractors. These tractors are expensive than utility tractors. A row crop tractors with adjustable tread width allows the tractor to pass through the rows of cereals, maize, tomatoes or other crops without crushing the plants.
Orchard tractors are special farm machines used in in fruit orchards, nut orchards and vineyards to pick high hanging fruits. These tractors provide a great height as compared to other types of tractors so that farmers seat comfortably to pick the fruits. It also allow easy passage between tree rows. The tree branch snagging risk can be reduced through underslung exhaust pipes. It has large sheetmetal cowlings and fairings that allow branches to deflect and slide off. It also has wire cages to protect the operator from snags.
Industrial tractors are used for Industrial purposes to perform task like pulling heavy loads. These can be fitted with cranes to lift the weights. These tractors can be fitted with engineering tools such as dozer blades, buckets, hoes, rippers, etc to perform industrial task. Dozer blades or buckets are the most common attachments for the front of a tractor. A tractor with a blade attached in the front and a rope-winch behind is known as a bulldozer which have excellent ground hold and their main tasks are to push or drag.
Garden tractors are used for gardening works like cutting the grass, making the flower bed, snow removal, and small property cultivation etc.. These are designed and constructed in a very small size with engine power ranges from 1 to 20 HP. Generally, these tractors have one or two cylinder petrol engines, although diesel engine models are also available. Diesel powered garden tractors are larger and heavier duty than gasoline powered units. Garden tractors are more sturdily built, with stronger frames, larger wheels mounted with multiple lugs, heavier transaxles, and has the ability to accommodate a wide range of front, belly, and rear mounted attachments.
Rotary tillers are walking type tractors that are used in small fields on the hill where the fields are not uniform and are at different height levels. The only equipment they can cope up with is blades which can be used for setting seedbeds in the farm.
