Delhi has served as a capital of various kingdoms and empires. Being a union territory, the political administration of the NCT of Delhi more closely resembles that of a state of India, with its own legislature, high court and an executive council of ministers headed by a Chief Minister. New Delhi is jointly administered by the federal government of India and the local government of Delhi, and serves as the capital of the nation as well as the NCT of Delhi. The city is believed to be the site of Indraprastha, the legendary capital of the Pandavas in the Indian epic Mahabharata. Hindi is the most spoken language in Delhi followed by Punjabi, Urdu and Bengali.
The Jama Masjid which is largest mosque in India built in 1656 and the Red Fort found in the old City was constructed by the Mughals and the Turkic rulers. Three World Heritage Sites, the Red Fort, Qutub Minar and Humayun's Tomb are located in Delhi. Other monuments include the India Gate, the Jantar Mantar which is an 18th-century astronomical observatory and the Purana Qila which a 16th-century fortress.
India Gate is a prominent landmark of Delhi, that was built in 1931. It is a war memorial to soldiers of British Indian Army who died during First World War. The Laxminarayan temple, Akshardham temple, Gurudwara Bangla Sahib, the Lotus Temple and the ISKCON temple are examples of modern architecture. Raj Ghat and associated memorials houses memorials of Mahatma Gandhi.
The Rashtrapati Bhavan, the Secretariat, Rajpath, the Parliament of India and Vijay Chowk are examples of British colonial architecture where as Safdarjung's Tomb is an example of the Mughal gardens style.
The National Museum and National Gallery of Modern Art are some of the largest museums in the country. Other museums in Delhi include the National Museum of Natural History, National Rail Museum and National Philatelic Museum.
Along with Indian cuisine, a variety of international cuisines are popular among the residents of Delhi. The classic dishes of the city include butter chicken, dal makhani, shahi paneer, aloo chaat, chaat, dahi bhalla, kachori, gol gappe, samosa, chole bhature, chole kulche, gulab jamun, jalebi and lassi.
Delhi is also a hub for shopping of all kinds. Connaught Place, Chandni Chowk, Sarojini Nagar, Khan Market and Dilli Haat are some of the major retail markets in Delhi. Major shopping malls include Select Citywalk, DLF Promenade, DLF Emporio, Metro Walk and Ansal Plaza.
