Jammu also known as 'City of Temples' is a land of grand ancient temples and beautiful palaces. Jammu is the winter capital of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. The region of Jammu constitutes the southernmost unit of the state of Jammu & Kashmir which is nestled against the backdrop of the snow-capped Pir Panjal Mountains. It forms part of the transition between the Himalayan range in the north and the dusty plains of Punjab in the south. A series of scrub-covered hills, forested mountain ranges and river valleys lies between these two extremities.
The microclimatic regions extend from Kishtawar in the north-east to Akhnoor in the south-west, and the historic town of Poonch in the north-west to the borders of Kangra of Himachal Pradesh in the south-east. The Shivalik hills cut across the area from the east to the west while the rivers Ravi, Tawi and Chenab cut their way through the region.
The main attractions of Jammu are Bahu Fort, Mubarak Mandi Palace, Raghunath Temple, Shivkhori, Purmandal, Shesh Mahal, Dogra art museum and many more.
The Bahu Fort stands tall and sturdy on the left bank of the Tawi River which is located only 5 km from the central part of the city. This magnificent fort was constructed by Raja Bahucholan over 3000 years ago. It is one of the oldest monument in the city. The Dogra rulers then made some restorations and renovations to the fort and extended its reach. This fort is also famous for its Goddess Kali temple. The people of Jammu worship Goddess Kali, a reincarnation of Goddess Parvati. The locals often refer to this temple as Bave Wali Mata Temple.
Mubarak Mandi Palace is an elaborate blend of Rajasthani, Mughal and European influences.
The Shesh Mahal or The Pink Hall houses the Dogra Art Museum which has several miniature paintings and Emperor Shah Jahan's golden bow and arrow, among other interesting things. The museum museum is an ideal destination for experiencing the folklore and culture of Jammu along with Ladakh and Kashmir.
Mansar Lake is a lake surrounded by forest covered hills which is is located 62 km from Jammu. It is spread over a mile in length by half a mile in width. It is a holy site, sharing the legend and purity of Lake Mansarovar.
The Raghunath Temple is a prominent temple and tourist spot that is located in Jammu and has the influence of the Mughal style of architecture. However, the tower that can be found over the main shrine is said to be built in the Sikh architectural style. The Raghunath Temple comprises a complex of seven Hindu shrines. The magnificent temple also has seven shikharas or spires, where each shrine has its separate shikhara. The temple is also one of the biggest complexes in entire northern India. The regal temple has many gods and goddesses, but the presiding deity is Lord Rama, the eighth avatar of Lord Vishnu.
Shivkhori, a divine shrine of an avatar of Lord Shiva, is located in the lap of nature in the form of a cave on a hillock in Udhampur district. The height of the lingam is 4 foot and was formed naturally in a cave. This self-manifested lingam of Lord Shiva is also known as Swayambhu and is of great importance in Hindu religion. It is believed that the cave is dedicated to one of the forms of Lord Shiva, which is believed to be unborn and invisible.
The journey to the cave-shrine requires trekking over 3 kilometers and the route inside the cave is challenging for many, and the thrill is worth experiencing as devotees are sure to feel blessed at the sight of the idol.
