Jharkhand is a state in eastern India, carved out of the southern part of Bihar on 15 November 2000. The state shares its border with the states of Bihar to the north, Uttar Pradesh to the northwest, Chhattisgarh to the west, Odisha to the south and West Bengal to the east. The city of Ranchi is its capital and Dumka its sub capital.

Much of Jharkhand lies on the Chota Nagpur Plateau. Many rivers pass through the Chota Nagpur plateau including Damodar, North Koel, South Koel, Sankh, Brahmani and Subarnarekha rivers. 

As its name suggests, Jharkhand is 'the land of forests'. The state is famous for its rich variety of flora and fauna. the Palamau Tiger Reserves under the Project Tiger, abode to hundreds of species of flora and fauna. The scenic beauty of forests, hills and plateaus from the Lodh Falls are enchanting. The lush green forests that surround the state keeps it green and clean.   

Several Iron slags, microlith, Potsherds have been discovered from Singhbhum district which are from 1400 BCE according to Carbon dating age. There are ancient Cave Paintings in Isko, Hazaribagh district which are from Meso-chalcolithic period (9,000-5,000 BC). Also, Stone tools have been discovered from Chota Nagpur plateau region which is from Mesolithic and Neolithic period. 

Hindi is the official language in Jharkhand and is spoken by the majority of the population, although different regions have their own dialects.
Rice, dal, vegetable and tubers are the staple food of Jharkhand. Chirka roti, Malpua, Pittha, Dhuska, Arsa roti, Dudhauri, Litti Chokha and Panipuri (Gupchup) are some of the other famous dishes.

Rugra and Putoo is a type of edible mushroom that is grown extensively in Jharkhand and harvested during the rainy months. It has a hardened, white, edible shell and a softer dark colored centre. Bamboo shoots are also used as vegetable. The leaf of Munga (Moringa oleifera) and Koinar tree(Bauhinia variegata) used as leafy vegetable or Saag.

Jharkhand is known for its waterfalls, hills and holy places. Jonha Falls, Hundru Falls, Dassam Falls, Netarhat, Parasnath, Betla National Park, Dalma Wildlife Sanctuary and Baidyanath Dham are some tourist spots in state.
