Dermatitis is a skin condition that causes itching and inflammation of the skin. It can be of different types such as contact dermatitis, atopic dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, etc.
Symptoms of dermatitis include inflammation, swelling, itching, burning sensation and redness. Severe dermatitis can also produce blisters, crusting, oozing and scaling of skin. Some of the common causes are an allergic reaction, certain environmental conditions, irritants, accumulation of toxins in the body, nutritional deficiencies, and genetics. People who have thin or dry skin are more prone to dermatitis. It is not contagious. However, it can make people feel uncomfortable and embarrassed.
Dermatitis is often confused with eczema but they are different conditions. There are many home remedies that can give you relief from dermatitis symptoms. Some of the effective home remedies and treatments that can provide fast relief against the uncomfortable complications of dermatitis include:

Coconut Oil for Dermatitis:

The amazing antimicrobial and moisturizing properties of coconut oil can greatly help relief the symptoms of dermatitis. It can significantly reduce redness, scaling and dryness within a few days.
Gently apply some warm coconut oil on the affected area to soften the skin. For best results, use virgin coconut oil daily before going to bed.

Oatmeal for Dermatitis:

A colloidal oatmeal bath is a good remedy to keep the skin clean and help treat skin irritation, itching and rashes. It will also help keep your skin moisturized.
Mix one cup of fine powdered oatmeal in lukewarm bath water and soak in this bath water for 15 to 20 minutes daily. Repeat this remedy daily for one month to see the result.

Apple Cider Vinegar for Dermatitis:

Another effective ingredient that can be used for treating dermatitis is apple cider vinegar which will relieve inflammation and itchiness.
Mix equal parts of apple cider vinegar and water. Use a cotton ball to apply this solution on the affected skin. Allow it to sit for about 30 minutes, and then clean the area with a damp cotton cloth. Repeat this remedy daily for a few weeks to see positive results. Alternatively you can consume two teaspoons of apple cider vinegar mixed in a glass of water two to three times daily.

Aloe Vera for Dermatitis:

Aloe vera is widely used in the treatment of inflammatory skin conditions like dermatitis because of its moisturizing and antimicrobial properties. This will help to restore the pH balance of your skin and relieve the itching sensation and skin irritation. The application of aloe vera gel to the severely affected area can provide relief. It can also be used for dermatitis under the eyes.
Apply fresh aloe vera gel several times a day for a few months to get rid of dermatitis. You can also drink a few ounces of aloe vera juice for a healthy and glowing skin.

Honey for Dermatitis:

Honey is another effective ingredient that can help reduce the inflammatory condition of the skin. It also has antiseptic and antibacterial properties.
Mix equal parts of raw honey, beeswax and olive oil and heat the mixture in a double boiler to make an ointment. Apply it to your skin and leave it on for several hours after it cools. Do this daily for several weeks to notice positive improvement in your skin condition. Applying manuka honey twice daily has been found to be beneficial in case of radiation-induced dermatitis.

Vitamin E for Dermatitis:

Vitamin E oil is one of the best and easiest home remedies for dermatitis. This oil promotes healing and provides relief from itching and inflammation.
Apply vitamin E oil on your skin, especially at night before going to bed. You can also try lotions and creams containing vitamin E. Regular consumption of foods rich in vitamin E, such as sunflower seeds, wheat germ oil, peanut butter and corn, can also help prevent dermatitis.

Chamomile for Dermatitis:

Chamomile flowers can have a soothing effect on the affected skin because of its therapeutic properties. As it can cause allergic reaction to some kind of skin, perform a patch test before using chamomile on your skin to rule out the possibility of it causing an allergic skin reaction.
Steep two or three teaspoons of chamomile flowers in a cup of water for 10 to 15 minutes. After cooling the solution, dip a piece of clean cloth in it and place on the affected area. Leave it on for 20 to 30 minutes. Do this a few times daily until you are satisfied with the results.
Alternatively, you can use a chamomile cream a few times a day or mix five to 10 drops of chamomile essential oil in your bath water and soak in it for about 20 minutes daily until you get relief.

Neem for Dermatitis:

Neem leaves can help restore your skin's health and protect it from various infections because of its antibacterial properties.
Mix one tablespoon each of sesame oil and turmeric powder in one tablespoon of ground neem leaves. Apply this paste on the affected skin and leave it on for a few hours before washing it off. Do this daily for a few months.
Alternatively you can add a few drops of neem oil to warm bath water and soak in it for about 20 minutes daily until you get relief.

Turmeric for Dermatitis:

Turmeric is considered as a wonder root with miraculous healing properties. Curcumin that is present in turmeric, has wonderful anti-inflammatory and antibacterial effects. It has been used as folk medicine for ages and has excellent antibiotic and antiseptic qualities.
The antioxidants present in turmeric help protect the skin against damage. Turmeric is great spice that is used as a natural treatment for skin cancer. Start your day with a teaspoon of turmeric powder. Mix one teaspoon of organic Turmeric in a glass of warm milk and drink it either in early morning or before bedtime. Continue the process for a month or so.
Alternatively heat a quart of water and add one half teaspoon of turmeric powder to it. Boil the solution and drink it after cooling the solution.
You can also use this solution to wash the affected area. Try this remedy daily for a few months. It may also be added in your daily cooking to as many dishes as you can such as soups, vegetables, salads and so on.

Slippery Elm for Dermatitis:

Due to its high mucilage content which helps moisturize the skin and promotes healing, slippery elm is a highly beneficial natural remedy for dermatitis.
Wash and grind a few slippery elm leaves to make a paste and apply it on the affected skin. Leave it on until it dries completely and then wash it off. Do this thrice daily until you see improvement.

Babool or Gum Arabic Tree for Dermatitis:

Babool tree or Gum arabic tree, particularly the bark is useful in treating dermatitis. Boil a small quantity of Acacia arabica bark in water and let the vapors reach the affected area. Apply clarified butter to the same area after the procedure.

Additionally you can do the following things to treat and prevent dermatitis:

Add Nutrition to your Diet:

Immunity plays a key role in defending the body from allergens and irritants. By eating a healthy balanced diet with the necessary vitamins and minerals you can boost your immunity. Vitamin C, zinc, and vitamin B-complex are excellent supplements for improving immunity. So, add foods that are rich in these vitamins.

Wear Cotton Clothing:

Cotton clothing are best choice for a patient with dermatitis as it provide the best comfort for the irritated skin. Woolen, polyester, and artificial synthetics trigger/aggravate itching. Tight clothes should always be avoided.

Maintain Air Temperature:

Avoid rapid changes in temperature surroundings. The sudden rise or drop in surrounding temperature could trigger the itching. As the skin should not be exposed to extreme temperatures, hot baths should also be avoided. Also avoid the exposure to ultra violet rays of sun.

Avoid Dry Air:

As dehumidified air worsens dermatitis, the air indoors must be kept moist for the patient. It should be kept next to the patient's bed to provide the best access to moist air for best result.

Avoid Scratching:

Avoid scratching the irritated areas as it could break the skin and cause secondary infections. To avoid involuntary scratching, trim your nails, and try to use your fingers to massage, rather than nails to scratch. If a child is affected, trim his or her fingernails short and put on some mittens for them while they sleep at least at night, to prevent harmful scratching.

Avoid topical antihistamines:

These products can cause allergic reactions, in the form of severe rashes, when rubbed on the skin. Take an oral OTC antihistamine instead such as Benadryl or Chlor-Trimeton, to help relieve itching. Such products generally cause drowsiness which may actually be helpful at night when itching is most severe. Avoid driving or operating heavy machinery, if you take an antihistamine during the day and it makes you drowsy.

Stay away from products that end with caine:

The medicine is derived from an anesthetic if the generic name of a skin product ends with the letters caine such as benzocaine. Do not use these products as anesthetics often cause or aggravate allergic reactions in sensitive skin.

Apply Cool compresses:

Dip a clean cloth into cool water or Burow's solution which is easily available as over-the-counter at any nearest pharmacy, and place it on the rash for 10 to 15 minutes every hour. Wet compresses are also helpful when weeping, oozing blisters are present.
Whole milk compresses are also effective in relieving the symptoms as the protein in dairy products helps relieve itching.

Use an over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream:

It is available as over the counter (OTC) in 0.5 and 1 percent strengths which can ease the itch and inflammation of dermatitis. It can even suppress, the body's ability to fight a bacterial or fungal infection, which may develop if excessive scratching has torn the skin.

Topical hydrocortisone may be a better treatment choice for allergic dermatitis than for irritant dermatitis for fast relief.

Apply calamine lotion:

This lotion can help relieve the itch. Apply it thinly, so the pores aren't sealed, two to three times a day to get the best result.

Isolating the cause of a rash:

Identifying a rash as allergic contact dermatitis is not always easy. It may take up to 72 hours to shows up reaction on your skin after contact with the sensitizing substance. Also you have to come in contact with it at least once before the next contact will provoke an allergic response. However, you can avoid those known allergen to prevent allergic contact dermatitis. For example, if you are sensitive to nickel, take off any nickel-containing jewelry while going out in hot as wearing nickel-containing jewelry in a hot, humid environment may worsen the allergy.
You can also paint the surfaces that come in contact with your skin with clear nail polish if you wish to wear those.
You may need to restrict your gold purchases to 24 karat as 14 karat gold jewelry also has some nickel in it. If you decide to get your ears pierced, make sure those first earring studs have stainless steel posts if you have an allergy to nickel. Also make sure the needle is stainless steel.
If your skin breaks out in a rash when it comes in contact with PABA or another chemical common in consumer products, read the label carefully before purchasing and avoid those product.

Protect your skin from Dermatitis:

Protect your skin against exposure to poisonous plants or ultra violet rays of sun by wearing long pants and long-sleeved shirts.

Avoid exposure to the irritant:

If exposure to household products is the cause of dermatitis and your hands are suffering, wear gloves made of vinyl, rather than rubber or latex, when using those products. Vinyl doesn't cause allergic reactions.

Protect your skin from additional irritation if you have atopic dermatitis.

You can do this by following steps:

  • Wash new clothes before wearing which helps remove formaldehyde and other potentially irritating chemicals used to treat fabrics.
  • Even if you use a mild laundry detergent, it is a good idea to rinse your clothes twice to make sure all of the soap is removed.
  • Choose loose-fitting, open-weave, cotton or cotton-blend clothes so that your skin will be able to breathe.
  • Rinse the soap you use thoroughly and gently pat away excess moisture. Then apply moisturizer to your damp skin to seal in the water. Plain petroleum jelly is the best after-bath sealant. Choose a mild soap always.
  • Use moisturizer throughout the day as it is extremely important for people with atopic dermatitis to keep their skin from becoming too dry.
  • Use a sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher as sunburn can irritate the skin further.
  • After you finish your swim, take a shower or bath and use a mild soap all over as the chlorine and other chemicals in most swimming pools can irritate sensitive skin. Don't forget to reapply your moisturizer, as well.

If you suspect a particular food aggravates your rash, omit it from your diet for a few weeks. If the rash clears up but then returns when you reintroduce the food in your diet, consider permanently avoiding the food. You can work with your child's pediatrician to investigate the possibility of atopic dermatitis caused by a food-allergy.
