Rakshabandhan Meaning And Significance

The meaning of Rakshabandhan is the tie or knot of protection which comes from two sanskrit words namely Raksha and bandhan. This is mainly a Hindu festival which celebrates the love and bond between siblings. On this particular day, a sister ties rakhi thread on the wrist of brothers as a way to wish long life for him with all success and happiness in life. As its name implies, auspicious rakhi thread also protect brothers against bad eye. In return, a brother also promises to protect his loving and caring sisters forever in any situation of life. This festival is also celebrated with cousins as well as other distant family members. As per hindu calendar, this auspicious and delightful eve is observed in the month of sravana which falls every year in the month of august.
Although name of this eve vary from state to state, the main intention remains to be same which is celebrating the love and affection between siblings. In Maharashtra, Rakhi Purnima is known as Narali Purnima. In Tamil Nadu Rakhi Purnima is observed as Avani Avittam. This is considered as a significant day for Brahmin community to wear and change the sacred thread. In Andhra Pradesh, the same ritual of changing thread is known as Jandhyala Purnima. In other parts of India, changing of sacred thread during Shravana Purnima is known as Upakarma day.
There are many stories related to the origin of this festival.

According to the Hindu mythology, long ago, a battle took place between the Gods and the Demons ,which carried on continuously for 12 long years. At the end of which the Demons not only captured the throne of the King of the Gods-Indra, but also the entire three Worlds. Indra went to the spiritual teacher of the Gods, Brihaspati when he lost the battle for his advice. Brihaspati advised Indra to chant some mantras that would provide him protection. In the month of Shravan on a Full Moon day, Brihaspati initiated the process of chanting the mantras. A thread was tightly tied around a small packet containing the blessings during this ceremony. After the ceremony, this small packet containing the protection blessings was tied on Indra's right wrist by Lord Indra's wife, Shachi. Lord Indra got back His strength to defeat the Demons and reclaim back His lost kingdom because of these blessings.

The holy thread is considered as bond of protection. It is the symbol of love and bond between brothers and sisters. Therefore rakhi festival that reinforces and reaffirms the love between a sister and brother follow this mythological story. The brother promises to look after his sister and protect her all his life, when the sister prays for the long life of her brother.

Raksha Bandhan History

It is also said that when the god of death Yama didn't visit his sister Yamuna, the goddess of Yamuna river for almost 12 years, she was sad and talked to Ganga, the goddess of Ganga River. Ganga then reminded yama of his sister after which he went to meet Yamuna. Yama was extremely happy and asked her if she wanted any gift. Yamuna then asked him to visit soon to meet her. Yama was very happy to see the love of his sister and meet her again that turned Yamuna into immortal.
This is the basis of rakshabandhan like festival called bhai duj which is also dedicated to siblinghood. It is observed nearby diwali.

These are few stories related to the celebration of rakhi purnima. Every year in the month of august, this festival is celebrated to strengthen the bond and love between brothers and sisters by tieing and sending rakhi to siblings.
