Sambalpur is a Municipal Corporation and located in the western part of Odisha, and is one of the largest and oldest cities in the state. It is the headquarters of Northern Revenue Division, Mahanadi Coalfield Limited (MCL) and one of the railway division from East Coast Railway zone. It is situated about 300 km west of the state capital Bhubaneswar, 550 km west of Kolkata in West Bengal and 278 km east of Raipur in Chhattisgarh. It is situated on the bank of the Mahanadi River.
Sambalpur is famous for premier educational institutes like Sambalpur University, Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR), Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), Gangadhar Meher University, Indian Institute of Management Sambalpur and Odisha State Open University (OSOU). Hirakud Dam, the longest earthen dam in the world and the largest artificial lake of Asia, is at Hirakud.
Sambalpur is the gateway to the western zone of Orissa which is a beautiful amalgamation of modernity and culture. The place also has a flourishing textile and handloom industry popular for its unique patterns and style. In addition to that, Sambalpur has a flourishing tribal life with exclusive exquisite folk songs-dances and culture. Sambalpur got its name from Devi Samaleswari who is the main goddess of the region.
Sambalpur is the biggest city of western Odisha and is famous for the number of freedom fights that took place here which make this place historically important too.
The main attraction of Sambalpur are Hirakud Dam, Budharaja temple, Ghanteshwari Temple, Samaleswari temple, Leaning temple of huma, Shopping and many more.
Hirakud Dam is one of the longest man-made dams in the world that is constructed across the Mahanadi River in Hirakud. This marvellous construction was built in the year 1956.
The Hirakud Reservoir is also situated in the close vicinity of the dam and is a focal point of interest for tourists and large flocks of birds as well. A number of migratory birds fly towards this destination during the winter season. Common Pochard, Red-crested Pochard and Great Crested Grebe are some of the common birds found here.The dam stretches over a length of 4.8 kilometers and spans between the Burla and Hirakund hill. In addition to being a stunning natural beauty, the dam is also responsible for a 307.5-megawatt power generation and the irrigation of 3,90,000 acres of land area stretching across Sambalpur, Bargarh and Subarnapur district.
Budharaja temple at the peak of Budharaja hill is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This shrine has breathtaking views of the dam from its summit.
Ghanteshwari Temple is served as a lighthouse for the incoming ships and the bells were used to warn the sailors.
Samaleswari temple is located on the banks of Mahanadi and is dedicated to Devi Samaleswari also known as Jagannath Adishakti, Mahalaxmi and Mahasawarswati.
Leaning temple of huma is dedicated to Lord Shiva and was built in the 17th century. This is the only leaning temple in the world. In this temple, only the top is leaning while the pinnacle is perpendicular to the ground.
