Dry hair look lacklustre and be fragile and brittle as it does not absorb or retain enough moisture to keep its texture and brightness. Dry hair is also hard to make any style. Although it may look unhealthy, but does not necessarily it is because of any health problem. Some possible medical causes of dry hair may be anorexia nervosa, Menkes disease, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, and other hormone abnormalities. However most of the time the time the factors contributing to dry hair are:
  •     nutritional deficiencies
  •     excessive sun exposure
  •     contact with chlorinated water
  •     excessive hair wash
  •     use of styling products and tools
  •     use of harsh hair products
There are a few things you can do if you feel like reducing the dryness of your hair. These include:

Trim your hair:

Your hair might need a reset in the form of a fresh cut if it is too dry. Even if your hair isn't very long, split ends can make hair hard to style and contribute to it feeling dry or coarse. So trim off hair that is unhealthy and weighing down fresh hair growth.

Vitamins for Dry Hair:

Vitamins are vital to nourish your body. However, certain vitamins directly impact the health of your hair and nails, too. Vitamin A, vitamin C, biotin (sometimes called vitamin H), and the mineral iron can be taken for dry hair to make it healthier.

Omega-3s and antioxidants for Dry Hair:

Marine proteins keep your hair from thinning out and can make hair look shinier. Increase the amount of marine proteins in your diet if you don't want to take any supplement. You can include salmon, oysters, mackerel, tuna and sardines in your diet which are rich in peptides and omega-3s that can make your hair shinier. You might also consider eating more antioxidants to combat oxidative stress, which makes hair look older. Some foods that are rich in antioxidants include walnuts, kidney beans, blueberries, broccoli and tomatoes. Healthy fats, like those found in canola oil can also be added to your diet for healthy hair.

Avoid washing your hair every day:

Shampoo removes dirt and sweat from your hair. But at the same time it also remove sebum from your hair, which is the natural oil that makes your hair easier to maintain. Your hair will look shiny when you have the right amount of sebum. Too much sebum leads to a greasy hair appearance. You can most likely wash your hair every alternate day to retain the sebum. As a result your hair appear healthier. If you can't do a day in between washing, at least use a shampoo specifically for dry hair or even try a baby shampoo. Both are mildly cleansing without stripping hair completely of its natural oil.

Wrap your hair instead of air drying:

Your hair loose too much moisture during the drying process and hence making it brittle and difficult to style after you wash it. Try wrapping your hair with a cloth or towel after you wash it instead of letting it air dry. Use a silk pillowcase to keep your hair's moisture from getting absorbed into your pillows if you sleep with your hair wet. Your hair  will be damaged more if you leave it wet for long periods of time.

Avoid heat styling:

As heat styling to curl, straighten, or add volume to your hair is a reason behind the dryness of your hair, try avoiding these. If you are going to blow dry your hair, keep the dryer at least 6 inches away from your hair shaft for best results.

Use colder showers:

The hot water that you use to rinse your body in the shower might also be one of the reason for dryness of your hair. Cold showers have some health benefits, and making hair grow faster could be one of them. Rinse your hair under a cooler temperature of water for a minute or two after you shampoo and condition your hair in the shower to revitalize strands and refresh your scalp.

Use essential oils:

Using a few drops of argan oil on the ends of your hair may give it a more finished and supple appearance. Other essential oils, like peppermint oil and lavender oil, may help stop hair loss and prevent breakage.
Applying a mixture of argan oil, peppermint oil, lavender oil, and a carrier oil like coconut oil may make your hair feel less dry over time.

Avoid prolonged sun exposure:

Ultraviolet rays can damage your hair shaft the same way they can damage your skin. Limit your hair's exposure to these rays if you have dry hair. Wear a hat whenever you go out or use umbrella, and avoid prolonged sun exposure. If your hair has already been exposed to UV rays, smoothing some pure aloe vera gel on your hair might help repair the damage.

Coconut oil for Dry Hair:

Coconut oil is a natural emollient that fills in the gaps in your hair strands if they have been damaged by heat or the sun. Coconut oil is particularly good at penetrating hair fibers. Coconut oil improves the overall appearance of your hair by smoothing your hair strand-by-strand. You can treat your hair to a deep-conditioning treatment of warmed coconut oil once every week. Follow the below step to apply coconut oil in your hair:
  •     Warm but do not boil around half a cup of oil.
  •     Gently massage it into the hair for some minutes.
  •     Cover the hair with a warm towel.
  •     Leave for 30−45 minutes or overnight.
  •     After this time, shampoo and rinse the hair.
This treatment will strengthen and add shine to dry hair. You can also use olive oil, almond oil, castor oil, jojoba oil or corn oil instead of coconut oil. All of these oils are rich in vitamin E and antioxidants and help to seal the outer hair layer or cuticle with moisture, thus repairing the damage.

Trying these tips for your dry hair is easy enough, with no risk involve. But long-term hair loss and breakage can be a sign of other health issues. Speak to a dermatologist if you have any of these symptoms:

  •     hair that comes out in clumps
  •     bald spots or patterns of baldness
  •     hair that breaks when you brush it
