What Is Sago?

Sago is a starch which is extracted from the center of tropical palm stems.  It is called Tapioca Sago in English and Javarishi in tamil. Its Botanical name is 'Manihot Esculenta Crantz Syn Utilissima'. You can easily get it in the market. Feed one food at a time to your baby and repeat the same new food for next couple of days to check if he get any food allergy. If you notice any signs of allergy , stop giving that food immediately which will help you understand if the particular food suits your baby or not.  It also help you understand if your baby can digest the food properly.

Sago is a easily digestible food. It is rich in vitamins, minerals, proteins and carbohydrates. It can also regulate your baby's body temperature if he is having fever. Always wash the Sago properly in water before cooking it.  It is easier to cook them if you soak the Sago in hot water. Do not add sugar or honey till your baby is one year old to prevent infant botulism. If you want to add any nuts, give them in the powder form. Blend the nuts and add it in the sago.

1 cup of Sago
5 cups of water
bit of salt

  • Take 1 cup of Sago, add 5 cups of water in the pan.
  • Bring it to a boil.
  • Add a pinch of salt.
  • Boil the sago until it turns mushy and transparent.
  • Let it be cool for some time.
  • You can add mashed banana or apple to make it tastier and healthier.

2.Sago Porridge Or Sabudana Kheer Recipe For Babies:


1 cup of Sago
5 cups of water
1 cup milk
powdered almonds

  • Take 1 cup of sago and Wash it properly.
  • Boil it in 5 cups of water water until it turns transparent and gel-like.
  • Boil some milk In a separate pan.
  • Add some powdered almonds to it.
  • You can also add powdered cardamom to enhance the flavor.
  • Once the milk boils, mix it with the Sago.
  • Mix well and cook for some time.
  • You can add a little jaggery or sugar for sweetness.
