Artificial insemination or intrauterine insemination (IUI) is done by inserting the male partner's (or donor's) prepared semen through the cervix and into the uterus, during the time of ovulation. It is a simpler, less invasive procedure of fertility treatment.
IUI treatment can be done in a couple of ways.
In this IUI procedure medication is not required and can be done in the woman's natural menstrual cycle.
In this IUI procedure medications are required to stimulate the ovaries to produce multiple eggs and cause ovulation with either Letrozole or FSH (follicle stimulating hormones) injections.
The semen sample is analyzed and washed in the laboratory. After the man gives a semen sample, it takes about one hour to process the sperm in the lab. Sperm processing may take longer, depending on the man's sperm. The final prepared sample is used for insemination where it is gently inserted into the uterine cavity using a speculum and a small catheter.
An IUI procedure is usually not painful and takes only a few minutes. You might feel mild cramping and/or discomfort some times. You can go back home right after the procedure and continue with the daily work.
Intrauterine insemination is effective in some cases when the sperm is of poor quality. Sperm counts between 20 and 30 million/ml of semen are ideal count for a successful IUI. Chances for pregnancy with IUI decreases if the total motile count of the sperm (after processing) is less than 5 million.
Success rates of IUI depend on the kind of fertility problem and age of the couple. IUI is mostly recommended to those couples who have unexplained infertility problem. Success rate of IUI for each natural IUI cycle is about 4-5 percent, and the pregnancy rate is about 7-16 percent when fertility medications are used.
The cost of intrauterine insemination with partner's sperm is usually between 10,000 and 15,000 per cycle. The ultrasound of follicle development cost has additional charges. The cost varies from clinic to clinic. It may cost between 10,000 and 50,000 in Bangalore, Mumbai and other big cities.
