Maintaining oral hygiene is as important as health. This include tongue cleaning along with brushing your teeth.
A healthy tongue is pink and makes the mouth smell fresh, whereas an unhealthy tongue could vary in color, from pale to bright red to purple. Your tongue could be one of these colors if you are suffering from bad breath. Most likely you will have a white tongue because of bacteria. Here are some tips that can help prevent bad breath:
  • The best way to prevent bacteria from growing on your tongue is to clean it regularly. When bacteria and amino acids combine, it forms halitosis-causing compounds that emits an unpleasant sulfur-like smell. So cleaning your tongue regularly is important in fighting halitosis. There are many toothbrushes available in the market that are designed for tongue cleaning also. These brushes allow you to use the reverse side for this process.These brushes can remove up to 96 percent or more odor causing bacteria to eliminate bad breath.
  • Use a hygienic tongue scraper for tongue scraping which must always be done using a downward motion. Do not to use too much pressure while scraping.
  • Thoroughly wash your mouth with water after scraping.
  • Occasionally  use a mouthwash which will fight the bad odor caused by bacteria deposition on your tongue. However, overuse can cause your mouth to become too dry.
  • Saline water is a great alternative to chemical mouthwashes as it is safe. Simply gargle your mouth with warm salt water about five to six times a day.
  • Drinking plenty of green tea can help prevent bad breath because it kills oral bacteria.
  • Eat a lot of fresh, crunchy, raw veggies as they are really helpful in keeping you as well as your tongue healthy. Certain foods like raw onion or garlic cause bad breath. Such foods, when ingested and excreted by the lungs, cause halitosis. But avoiding acidic foods like vinegar or high-fructose foods like sugary cereal cuts down on bad breath too. Both acids and sugars increase production of bacteria and bad breath.
  • A coat of white layer in your tongue when you are ill is a result of fungal infections. Apply a proper ointments for this.
  • As dehydration is another factor to cause tongue discoloration, drink plenty of water, at least 2 liter a day if not more. When your mouth doesn't have enough moisture to produce saliva, odor-causing bacteria can develop. Staying hydrated is important, particularly before and after heavy exercise, when rapid breath can increase dry mouth. Also  be sure to drink water when you first wake up.
  • Regular tongue cleaning will help prevent different bacterial growth in your mouth that could cause bad breath as well as other oral problems.     
Good oral hygiene not only help you keeping you healthy but also helps people develop a positive impression about you.  Clean tongue is an essential aspect of oral hygiene. Therefore please do take care of it.
