Dandruff is a condition of the scalp that causes flakes of skin to appear. It is often accompanied by itching, greasy patches on the scalp and tingling skin. Various risk factors are associated with this condition. These may include certain skin or medical conditions and the use of inappropriate hair products. Underlying causes of dandruff include dry skin, seborrheic dermatitis, sensitivity to hair products and the growth of a specific type of fungus that lives on the scalp.
There are plenty of over-the-counter products available in the market for the treatment of dandruff. But you should first try natural remedies that can be effective. However, more severe cases should be seen by a doctor.
The aims of the treatment is to stop the dandruff by slowing down the reproduction of skin cells or counteracting the yeast production which could be the cause. The strategy will depend the age of patient and the severity of the condition. However, lifestyle changes and home remedies can help get rid of dandruff. These include:

Manage Stress Levels:

Stress has a severe impact on many aspects of health from chronic conditions to mental health. Although stress itself doesn't cause dandruff, it can aggravate symptoms like dryness and itching. High levels of stress in long-term may suppress the immune system of your body and a weakened immune system can reduce your body's ability to fight off some of the fungal infections and skin conditions that contribute to dandruff.  
Seborrheic dermatitis, one of the most common causes of dandruff is develop by high level of stress in most of the people. Try some stress reduction techniques, such as meditation, yoga, deep breathing or aromatherapy to keep stress levels under control.

Shampoo more often:

If you have oily hair and scalp, washing daily can help. Washing and brushing the hair can help remove old skin flakes.

Tea Tree Oil for Dandruff:

Because of the anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties of tea tree oil, it may help alleviate symptoms of dandruff such as greasiness and itchiness. Tea tree oil is effective at fighting the specific strain of fungus that can cause both seborrheic dermatitis and dandruff.
As tea tree oil can cause irritation in sensitive skin, it is advisable to dilute it by adding a few drops to a carrier oil like coconut oil before applying it directly to the skin.

Coconut Oil for Dandruff:

Because of antimicrobial properties of coconut oil, it may help improve skin hydration and prevent dryness, which can worsen dandruff. Coconut oil was as effective as mineral oil in improving skin hydration and can be used the treatment of eczema, a skin condition that may contribute to dandruff. It can also be used for the treatment of atopic dermatitis, a type of eczema characterized by itching and inflammation.

Aloe Vera for Dandruff:

The antibacterial and antifungal properties of aloe vera could help protect against dandruff. Aloe vera is effective against several species of fungi and may help control fungal infections that cause hair loss from the scalp. It can also reduce inflammation, which may relieve symptoms of itchiness.

Apple Cider Vinegar for Dandruff:

Apple cider vinegar has many health benefits including improving insulin sensitivity and reducing weight. Apple cider vinegar helps removing dead skin cells and balance the pH of the scalp because of acidic property. Its compounds can prevent the growth of certain types of fungus and thus fight dandruff. Add a few tablespoons to your shampoo or combine it with other essential oils and spray directly onto hair and scalp.

Aspirin for Dandruff:

Salicylic acid is one of the primary compounds found in aspirin that is responsible for its anti-inflammatory properties. It is also found in many anti-dandruff shampoos.
Salicylic acid works by helping get rid of scaly skin and loosening flakes so that they can be removed. It is effective in the treatment of seborrhoeic dermatitis and dandruff. Crush two tablets of aspirin and add the powder to your shampoo before washing your hair.

Omega-3s for Dandruff:

Omega-3 fatty acids only help make up the cell membranes that surround your cells, but also very essential for the function of your heart, immune system and lungs. They help manage oil production and hydration, promote wound healing and prevent premature aging. Hence these are vital to skin health.
Dry hair, dry skin and even dandruff can be result of deficiency in omega-3 fatty acids. It can also reduce inflammation, which may help relieve irritation and dandruff symptoms. You can add food that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids such as fatty fish like salmon, trout and mackerel, flaxseed, chia seeds and walnuts. You can also also take a fish oil supplement.

Probiotics for Dandruff:

Probiotics are a type of beneficial bacteria that has many health benefits including protection against allergies, lower cholesterol levels and increased weight loss.
Probiotics can also help enhance immune function, which could help the body fight against the fungal infections that cause dandruff. These are also helpful in  decreasing the symptoms of skin conditions like eczema and dermatitis, especially in infants and children.    
They are found in many types of fermented foods, such as kombucha, kimchi, tempeh, curd, sauerkraut and natto. Probiotics are available in supplement form for a quick and convenient dose.

Baking Soda for Dandruff:

Baking Soda act as a gentle exfoliant to remove dead skin cells and reduce scaling and itchiness. Because of its antifungal properties, it is beneficial in the treatment of dandruff. It can reduce fungal growth and hence can be used in the treatment of atopic dermatitis and psoriasis. Apply baking soda directly to wet hair and massaging it into your scalp. Let it sit for a few minutes. Continue shampooing your hair as usual.
Try these remedies alone or pair them with over-the-counter products like anti-dandruff shampoos to increase the effectiveness.
